Linda Burrell's August Blog

I am new to blogging so here goes. The article, "Not This" stepped on my toes because I do many of the things that the author indicates as "time stealers". Some of these things are calender time and morning messages along with many of the ways students are lined up. I do feel all these are important in K5, However, I need to become more aware of minutes I can save to read/conference with and observe children while reading. This ties back to the kidwatching articles that encourage specific note taking in a variety of settings. I agree that independent reading is important and must be included at all ages.

  1. I feel the same way Linda, I do many of the "time stealers" too. And they ARE important in a k5 classroom, but we will have to find a way to add more minutes to our independent reading/conferencing.

  2. I completely understand as well. While I do make time in my day for independent reading, I'm not sure it is being used as effectively as it should be. I don't have time to conference with students in read to self because during this time I am pulling reading groups for guided reading. I need to better ways to effectively have independent reading in addition to reading groups.

  3. Linda, it's great that you are thinking about changes you can make and yet be faithful to what you know is best for your students! I agree that "teaching moments" in kindergarten would be seen as "time stealers" in another grade. Thank you for seeing that independent reading is important no matter the grade or age.

  4. I believe we are all guilty of those "time stealers". I love lining my students up by color or the letters of the alphabet. I have also tried to make myself aware of the time I am spending on morning meeting activities.
