In the article, Not This by Debbie Miller, I realized that a few extra minutes for independent reading sounds pretty good.  I am all for giving students extra time with books especially if I can spend more time listening and talking with them.  But not sure if I am ready to give up some of the unnecessary calendar activities and transition times that she described in section 1.
She addressed how much time we waste on calendar skills but I feel that these skills are providing them with opportunities to learn many math concepts. As far as transition times, I feel that these are out of my control. Maybe a little less school wide morning and afternoon announcements would help.

This year my goal will be to look and listen to each individual student and give them more opportunities to read independently.

  1. Thank you, Reeda, for being so reflective of your teaching practice. I can see that the readings are making you stop and think about what you do and is it best for your students.
