Organize an Outstanding Classroom Library
A classroom library is a necessity for creating better
independent readers. Students with
access to a well-organized classroom library have been shown to have higher
achievement than those without. Teachers
should focus on the area, the book choices, and student involvement. Of course, teachers are always questioning
time, money, and space.
First, space must be available for the library. One of the key points was to make a space
that students want to be in. Comfy
chairs, lamps, and rugs in a way that is pleasing to the eye. The books should be able to be seen with the
covers out and organized in a way that appeals to students.
Next, there should be a large amount of good literature
available. A starter library would have
200 books that are current and well-written.
The books should span a variety of topics and be on a variety of
levels. There should be picture books,
comic books, and writing by the class.
This of course takes money!
Last, a library takes time.
A class will feel much more connected to the classroom library if they
are allowed to be involved in creating it, organizing it, and promoting
it. While involving students in the
process, you are encouraging them to take advantage of the library and, in
turn, become better readers.
I’m sure most of us update our closets as styles and seasons
change. We become creative with our
wardrobe when money is tight. We should
put the same effort into our classroom library.
Don’t let it become stale. Add a
few good, quality pieces. Keep the
timeless classics.
Susan, what a great nutshell of the classroom library component! I really like your connection to the closet. It is true that we should make the same effort with our classroom libraries that we make with our wardrobes. I was wondering how your students were enjoying their classroom library and the new additions you were able to make to it.
