Lindsey Craig- Organize an Outstanding Classroom Library

Organizing a classroom library is something I have always struggled with! Personally this should not be a big of a struggle as it is if I was not OCD! :)  There are many resourceful ways out there to organize however, I struggle finding the right one to fit the needs to my students. Lately, I have found that pulling the books myself from my library and placing them into smaller baskets at the back of the room has become the best fit! However, with this method I run into not having books on level for each student and not having books within their interest! I also feel like this limits my students! I don't like organizing my genre or topic because it always seems that those books never make it back to their home or they are pushed to the very back of a desk and found in May! :( I like the check-out system mentioned in the chapter. I found a really neat app on my i-pad where you scan in each book and then have the students scan their own books out. I hope to try this method in my classroom!
I also really love the "Make Books and Book Talk 'Hot' in Your Classroom" section in this chapter. I never thought about that! What a need idea to get students talking within the classroom about what they are reading. This would be a great place to have a padlet like we were shown in our after school portion.

  1. Lindsey, thank you for reflecting on your classroom library organization. I like that several of the ideas appeal to you and will perhaps help you find the just right fit you have been searching for. The idea of the app for book check out sounds interesting. Have you thought of a system that would put one of your students in charge--a classroom librarian to handle check out? That would free you of the task, and give the students more ownership. That's what I did--not high tech at all, but it worked.

  2. Hi Lindsey,
I love the ways that you are always considering how to take what you read and experience in professional development and apply it to improve your instruction. I'd love to know the name of the app you discussed in your post for book check out. Let me know how your book talks work too! This is a wonderful strategy and one that I have found successful in motivating students' reading. Thanks, Dawn

  3. I was able to try the book talks with padlet in the classroom just liked we used in class! My students loved it! Even heard one say she missed that part of one book that another student had wrote about! Will be doing more book talks in the future.
