November-Lindsey Craig- You Only Have So Much Time

I love all of the new ideas this chapter shared about time. I believe every teacher is guilty from time to time giving students "busy work" to get things done in their classroom. I had not thought about some of the ideas they gave for "seat work." This chapter expressed how important it was to make every minute count and I loved the question it gave as a reminder, "How is the activity helping my students become more independent as readers, writers and thinkers." I also often times forget how much students learn from each other. Another way I think we as teachers could save energy is having students teach students. The students in my classroom who are early finishers and often cause trouble could be turned into "helpers." I could place them with a small group of students who are struggling. This chapter shared a lot of great ways to revise my schedule and down time in my classroom!

  2. Hi Lindsey,
I too, loved this chapter and how the author, Debbie Miller challenged us to think about what "benches" we are guarding in our schedules and in our procedures that may not be the most productive or effective for our students. When I did this it revealed lots of practices that I had done before such as morning work or spelling games that in and of themselves aren't necessarily ineffective but the amount of time and priority placed on them took time away from areas I wanted to increase such as independent reading and time to confer with students. Tell me more about the strategies Miller suggested that you wanted to try out. What are you wanting to revise that you mentioned? Sincerely, Dawn

  3. One part of my schedule I want to revise and or change is my morning work time. I feel often this is a lot of time wasted however, its often necessary. When students finish their morning work they are allowed to read and take AR test. The only down side I see to this is that they rush through their morning work so that they can take test.
